What Our Semen Analysis Test Examines...

Motility

This test assesses how well the sperm cells move. It is important to determine the overall motility of the sample to give an indication of how likely the sperm are to reach and fertilise the egg within the natural environment.

Volume

The sample is weighed to determine its volume – this value is multiplied by the sperm concentration to give the total number of sperm cells present in the ejaculate.

Round Cells

Leukocytes (white blood cells) in sperm can indicate there are signs of inflammation and infection in the body, and immature sperm cells can indicate a problem with the production of mature sperm cells by the testes.

Concentration

Also referred to as the sperm count, this is the number of sperm cells present in 1 ml of your ejaculate. A healthy concentration of sperm is important to achieve a pregnancy naturally.

Agglutination

Motile sperm can ‘agglutinate’ or stick together, head-to-head or tail-to-tail which can make it difficult to assess the sample accurately.

Appearance

This is observed under the naked eye by the Andrologist to check for any variations in colour and opacity.

Aggregation

Sometimes, immotile sperm can bind to each other, or motile sperm can bind to other cells which can cause problems with conceiving naturally.

Morphology

The sperm cells are stained and observed under a high magnification to look in-depth at the structure of the cells. Any defects to the head, tail or midpiece of the cell are recorded and the number of morphologically ‘normal’ sperm are reported as a percentage.

Liquefaction

It is important to allow the sample to ‘liquefy’ from a thick substance into a watery consistency – this usually happens naturally within around 20 minutes after ejaculation. This makes it easier to assess the sample under the microscope.

pH Levels

A pH value of between 7.2 – 8 is ideal; below 7.2 indicates a more acidic sample, whereas any value above 8 indicates a more alkaline sample. A pH which is higher or lower than the normal values can suggest there is too much or too little secretions from one of the accessory glands involved in semen production. The underlying cause may be identified after further investigation.

Mar Test

The mixed anti-globulin reaction (MAR) is performed to test for the presence of anti-sperm antibodies in the ejaculate. These antibodies coat the surface of the sperm., and may damage the cells, reduce their motility and thus prevent fertilisation occurring.

Frequently Asked Questions:

Why should I choose the Male Fertility Clinic?
The Male Fertility Clinic is a service which was created due to the noticeable lack of safe spaces for men to access fertility testing. Quite often at larger IVF clinics or NHS hospitals, there are either :

- long waiting times for appointments
- inconvenient opening times
- upfront fees for consultations
- awkward & crowded waiting rooms
- frustration in chasing results

We have eliminated all of these factors to provide a service which patients need and want -

- a user-friendly booking system
- evening & weekend, as well as day time appointments
- reports guaranteed within 2 working days
- a small and friendly team, happy to answer any questions you may have
- NO hidden fees or extra costs
- a very discreet, private and environment within our clinic
How do I know if the test is right for me?
A semen analysis is a useful assessment for anyone who is trying for a baby now, or planning to in the future. Male infertility affects 50% of couples having difficulty with conceiving, so a semen analysis is a useful place to start if you are currently experiencing this.

For those who are not quite ready yet, discovering if there is an issue early on can help you to prepare and make necessary lifestyle changes to improve your sperm health over time.
How much does the test cost?
The cost is £169, which is payable at the point of booking. There is a £20 premium for Saturday appointments, due to high demand. We also have the option to pay using Paypal, who offer a ‘pay in 3’ service.
What can I do if my results are higher/lower than expected?
Depending on the findings of your report, there are usually lifestyle changes you can make which will have a positive effect on your sperm. There are many factors which can affect sperm quality including diet, alcohol consumption, smoking, and illness – if your results could be improved, we will suggest a suitable supplement as well as increasing your intake of whole foods, reducing stress levels and minimising activities such as cycling, which can increase the temperature of the testes and adversely affect sperm quality.

The lifecycle of sperm is 3 months, so following any changes in lifestyle or overcoming illness, we recommend having a repeat analysis performed after 3 months to check for any improvement.
Will you send anything to my home address?
If producing your sample at home, you will receive a sample collection pack in the post. This will be sent in discrete packaging to respect your privacy, and will include your sample pot and a checklist.

We send all sample packs via special delivery, however if you have not received it for any reason please email to let us know. We will track your parcel and either rearrange your appointment or send a new pack if it gets lost.

All results will be sent via secure email, unless you specifically request a hard copy to be posted to your home address.
How long will the appointment take?
When you bring your sample to the clinic at your appointment time, you will be asked a few routine questions and then you will be free to leave. If you have any additional questions for the Andrologist, please feel free to stay for a chat! Otherwise, all communication will be via email.

Patients producing their sample on site will be free to leave as soon as their sample is complete. Please notify the Andrologist that your sample is ready by ringing the door bell, and then making your way out of the building.

Appointments are spaced by 45 minutes to allow everyone time to arrive and leave discreetly. For this reason, we ask everyone to please arrive in a timely manner - arriving too early or too late may interfere with another person’s appointment.
When will my results be ready?
After your sample has been analysed by the Andrologist, your results are reviewed by a Clinical Embryologist and will be sent to your registered email address within 2 working days. Please make sure we have your correct email address on record.

If you have opted for ‘Sperm Photographs’, these will be sent the same day in a separate email.
What happens to my sample after it has been analysed?
All samples are disposed of immediately after analysis in the appropriate clinical waste bins. We are not a fertility treatment centre, and therefore do not have the license to store or use gametes.
Can I take my report to my GP for further advice?
Yes, we encourage you to discuss the findings of your report with your GP, as they have access to your full medical history and will be able to offer you clinical advice. Please be aware that if you undergo fertility treatment at another centre, they may require you to have a semen analysis at their clinic.
How can I cancel my appointment?
The payment for your appointment is taken at the point of booking, and is non-refundable if you fail to turn up to your appointment or give us adequate notice. We understand that circumstances may change, so if you need to re-arrange your appointment for any reason then please notify us as quickly as possible; failure to do this may result in your appointment being cancelled, for which you will not be refunded. If you have not been able to produce your sample on the day, please call the Andrologist using the phone number provided to discuss how to proceed.
